if he's active duty he'll keep it. You're enrolled from the moment he leaves for basic. If he's reservist I'm not sure. You'd have to talk to his command. But I think only enlisted (officer, ect) active duty can get Tricare Prime. And be careful where you want to be seen. If you're near a military base they'll want you to go there. My husband is deployed right now and I came back home and lucked out because Tricare has deemed it a tricare "prime" area. Which means I get full coverage to go to civilian doctors. Usually to go to civilian doctors you can't use the Tricare Prime.

He should be eligible for Prime if he's active duty. I had to change to Tricare Standard when he was deployed because I went home to stay w/ family. If you are near a base, there should be a Tricare Service Center where you can find out for sure. I usually go there for questions or call 1-888-tri-west.
