okay, last night we attended my daughters band/choir performance. Before the choir begin to perform, an eighth grade girl had a solo. Her song of choice was "Santa Baby" She performed in front of about 400 parents and family members, teachers and fellow students. She sang this song wearing a feather boa (black) and used a chair as a prop! I am not kidding or making this up! I was embarresed for her! Do you think this was appropriate, and if you dont do you think the school should of allowed this? or am i just being old fashioned? The audience was left in shock and her fellow students said she looked like she was trying to seduce santa! Granted she sang well, although I was laughing to hard to hear the whole thing. (I was discreet and had to leave the room, along with about 20 other parents!)By the way her mother was video taping and was very proud of her.

I think it has become very easy for society to turn their head away from how quickly our children are growing up these days. I read an article the other day that cited that 8 is the new 12. Scary stuff.

Not only was that inappropriate for an eighth grader (I used to teach eighth grade and let me tell you, open sexuality is the LAST thing they need to be allowed to express) but I personally believe that it would be inappropriate for a high schooler as well within a school setting. The school is NOT the place for displays like that one. You were absolutely correct to feed uncomfortable with it. The mother was probably so wrapped up in the fact that her daughter was performing that she never stopped to really consider just what her daughter was performing.

Ive seen santa baby done at school shows, and ive seen it done like you're discribing. Thats how it was done on broadway, only it wasnt quite so sedate. Its a popular theme this time of year with the older grades since the santa foo-foo stuff is far below them.

I dont see anything wrong with it.

She wasnt wearing legerie or pole dancing.

I think it was probably a little more styled for highschool, and not 8th grade, but i dont see where it was horribly uncalled for.

For some reason, the schools are becoming as politically correct as the government. It's sad. I am shocked that my son's class was taught sex ed in 5th grade. I think that is contributing to the reason that children of today are becoming "adults" at 12.
That display sounds totally inappropriate and that child will probably be made fun of for weeks.

That kind of performance has no place in any school, especially 8th grade. Kids are growing up so fast and parents and teachers need to do something to stop it.

NO your NOT over reacting. People seem to think Innocent children imitating sluts is cute. As you and about 20 others found out, and I agree with you - IT'S NOT!!!!

I would have a few words with the director of that show.

Good Luck

Jesus Christ washing dishes in the local IHOP! aren't there more important things in the world to worry about? A feather boa? What is so provocative about that? And 8th grade? I am sorry to tell you sweetie...but by the time a kid is in the 8th grade, he/she has had friends who have had sex (or has had sex themselves), knows people who are doing various drugs and knows where to get those drugs, is typically as knowledgeable as their parents about sex (sometimes more so), has watched 1000s of hours of violence and sex on television, has played 1000s of hours of violent (and sometimes sexual) videogames, has been bullied numerous times, has learned in history class about a former president getting a hummer from an intern in the white house (and getting impeached for lying to a grand jury about it), and is typically so hyped up sexually that they can barely concentrate in school (especially the boys). The feather boa routine is mildly seductive...PG (at worst) in an NC-17 world. Relax and move on.

I wouldn't have allowed my daughter to do a routine like that for the school Christmas show!
