This site gives a pretty good "easy" explanation. It's from the EPA kids site.:

It is the trapping of heat from the Sun in a manner similar to a greenhouse. Greenhouses have glass walls and ceilings that let in visible light but not infrared light. They also let out visible light but not infrared light. Infrared light is radiated heat. So the greenhouse screens out heat but lets in light. The light is partly reflected from the things in the greenhouse (that is how we can see those things) and partly absorbed by them. The absorbed light warms up those things which then start to radiate infrared light. But the greenhouse won't let the infrared light out, so the greenhouse stays warmer than the outside. Things outside emit infrared light too, but it goes all the way back into outer space and does not warm the Earth as a whole.
The global warming greenhouse effect is where carbon dioxide in the air acts like the glass of the greenhouse, letting visible light pass but not infrared. The difference is that carbon dioxide is only a very small part of the air, so it only blocks a very small part of the infrared light. And there are violent arguments about whether or not the well known increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is enough to actually cause the climate of the entire Earth to warm up enough to cause problems. Understand that there is no argument about the carbon dioxide. Everybody agrees it is increasing and that people are the cause of that increase. It is the amount of warming that people argue about.

It's the process in which the absorption of infrared radiation by an atmosphere warms a planet. Without these greenhouse gases, the Earth's surface would be up to 30 °C cooler. (These are the actual words used in the webiste.)

Basically methane and other gases starts to buildup and lets sunlight into the Earth's atmosphere but not back out. Thus heat is trapped and global temps start to rise causing havoc and destruction. Not nice.

it is a natural process to ensure life on earth.when sunrays hit earth surface some of them r trapped maintaining earths temperature.this is green.h.e but, because of gases like co2,ccl4,watervapour,major part of rays r trapped leading 2 globalwarming...
