The same reason he also married Sawda bint Zama'a who was 65 years old. And Zaynab bint Khuzayma, who was old and died 3 months after her marriage. And Salma bint Umayya, who was also 65 years old.

And Hafsah bint U'mar, And Zaynab bint Jhash, his cousin sister, whom he later divorced. And the Jewess Juwariya bint al-Harith, of the Beni Al Mostalag tribe who had to convert to Islam after offering their Princess to Mohammad as a wife, or face extermination. And Safiyya bint Huyay of the Beni Nadir tribe of Levi, Jews.; whom he also conquered. And Umm Habiba bint Sufayan, of Ethiopia. And Maimuna bint al-Harith, who was 26 years old. And Maria al-Qabtiyya, the hand maiden gifted to him by the King of Egypt, who bore him his son.

And Aisha Siddiqa, 9 year old daughter of Abu Bakr, who became the first Caliph after Mohammads death, when he was in his 50's.

Edit:

Whoever said that Mohammad had 8 wives before Khadijah is wrong. She was his first wife. Of course, she'd been married twice before, and Mohammad was working in her Caravan. As to the poetic representation that she proposed to him; it's up to you to judge. He wasn't a "Prophet" then. That came much later.

All his 12 wives are detailed bove.

She proposed to him. She was the most noble and righteous woman of her time and that's what prophet Muhammad peace be upon him loved about her. She was also impressed by his wonderful and righteous personality. And his marriages weren't only to all the rich women. His marriages all contained wisdom behind them.

Why are you making a statement without doing your research. Muhammad (pbuh) married women who were shunned by and in fear of society so he could give them the shelter and respect provided by marriage at a time when unmarried women or women who's husbands had died were in fear of there life.

Love is blind. Status nor wealth can't interfere between them. Take a look at the story Romeo and Juliet.
