I don't want to be accused of "handholding," so here it is:
You say "Please forgive me." The rest is up to that nation.
Besides, nobody is "fatherless" just because their father is dead.

No one asked for forgiveness from my generation, the children of the Vietnam era. No one has ever said "Thank you for your sacrifice" or "We're sorry". These men went away before some of us were even born and we never got to know them, because they never came back. Children whose fathers served in the military then are grown and have their own kids now, some of whom are serving in the military. I don't think it's possible to be forgiven for the mistakes made then. I'm not sure I'm willing to forgive. I can't forgive sending our kids to Iraq, nor can I forget the men who died in Vietnam. The paralells are there for those who look for them. If either thing can be forgiven by anyone, they're a better person than I.

I liked that last part you added to qualify the question! IMO, actions almost always speak louder than words, so sending aid and reparation would definitely help. It might not produce instant forgiveness, but then, sometimes that is not the reason for apologizing; you do it rather to assuage your own conscience.
This country DOES have a lot to answer for when it comes to its invasion and decimation of other countries. We're not in a good position economically, thanks to the same people who caused this destruction, to give them much, since thousands of our own children are starving and homeless!

I do not need nor desire forgiveness from a society that fosters terrorism and follows a warped religion that instructs them to kill anyone who does not follow their bloodthirsty barbaric dogma.

Wow what a question! I had one about apologies yesterday. Just tell them "I was wrong for what I did and I am truly sorry! I have no excuses and I feel guilt ridden. Could you please find it in your heart to fogive me?" That's all you can do but don't make excuses for your actions - then it will not be a sincere apology.

you don't....because you can't...best you can do, is offer help, try to show your not evil, even if your intent was good, hind sight being 20/20.
all you can do is admit the mistake, offer aid for the damage you've done, and hope they can somehow find forgiveness for you.

One of the eternal questions. But it would be nice if we really tried. It's going to have to be accompanied by action.

i dont think any human being has been faced with that,,,, has caused that to happen,,,, but i would imagine if one had, it would be best to ask forgiveness just as you would any other thing you were sorry for, felt bad about etc,, apologize,, since it would be towards the whole nation, it would be difficult, i guess the mass media, if they had access to it,,,,

Sincerely. And when you say "sorry" you shouldn't do it again because it destroys a trust.
