A person buried under an avalanche usually has a pocket of air for breathing. But their body may have been shattered by the force of the snow. So they suffer from hyperthermia, broken bones, shattered ribs, punctured lung, or whatever. If they are not rescued in a relatively short time (thank God for the rescue dogs who can sniff them out), they may die of exposure or from their injuries.

When your trapped under like 10-50 metres of snow you don't know which way is up or down so eventually if they don't make it to the surface they freeze or starve to death!!!
