I have wondered the same thing - it has always been so frustrating to watch the show when people drop huge amounts of weight in very little time.
The difference between us "normal people" and the people on The Biggest Looser is that they are at a ranch all day and night. They are in the gym 3 to 4 hours a day - sometimes longer. They do not go out to eat. They have each other for support and on-site trainers.
I don't know bout you but I spend 4 hours a WEEK in the gym, I usually have lots of tempting food around me, no support team and no personal trainer.

These people on the show workout 3-4 hours intensely every day. Plus their diet is way out of whack than most people. So any change will produce tremendous change intially.
If you have a trainer, you'll always workout more intensely than when you are alone.
Some of it is water weight which they'll eventually gain back.

if your extremely overweight, obese, like some of them are,, and diet, exercise,, and have a couple hundred pounds to lose, it is possible , normally you start out losing weight slower, then it kicks in and you lose faster, till you get down to the last few pounds or within your natural weight, then you slow down again,,,,
maybe think of it this way
if you have 20 pounds to lose, its not unreasonable, with a strict regimen, to lose 2 pounds a week
if you have 100 pouns to lose, the same is possible at 10 pounds a week
you are simply getting rid of the excess that your body doesnt need
