People who hate tattoo have come up with the "tramp stamp" name and it angers me that those who love and wear tattoos even acknowledge that term.
If you feel compelled to worry about how you will appear or be thought of based on where you have a tattoo, possibly another tattoo is not right for you.
It is not about the art, either. I have seen gorgeous florals, fabulously balanced and artistic celtic and tribal work on many women who choose this location, none of whom are "tramps." Yet given these same beautiful tattoos on women who are perceived as "tramps" - it creates a different picture no matter where the tattoo is.
Lower back tattooing is one of the most popular spots for women because they don't have to worry about it stretching out like abdominal tattoo if/when they decide to get pregnant. Careful planning is done by these women.
Also, when choosing a lower back tattoo...be sure there is some space along the spine. Some crazy anesthesiologists still think a woman cannot have epidural anesthesia because ink can be pushed in with the needle into the spinal canal. Whatever. No one has proven this to actually be a problem, but just be sure there is space here and there to "move the skin" so they will have a virgin area to puncture so they don't freak.
Location of the tattoo is most often dictated by the design. Some tattoos just don't look good on the lower back and would look much better on the back of the shoulder, for instance, or as an ankle piece.
I am personally not in favor of foot/toe tattooing because of sun exposure creating excessive damage to the tattoo. There are some exceptions a competent artist would be able to discuss with you.

You are smart to tattoo places that are covered with clothes most of the time.
There is no such thing as a trashy place to get a tattoo, just trashy tattoos. Don't get any curse words, or a distorted and ugly face. Stay away from the lower parts of your foot. I have one on the inside back part of my ankle it goes almost all the way to the bottom of my foot and man did it hurt.

Tattoos are an art and should not be considered trashy. But reality is that Tattoos don't work well in a professional environments. If you plan on getting another tattoo, make sure you don't get the "LOWER BACK" tattoo that is said to be by men a target of the easy women. My brother and all his friends agree with the lower back statement and so far it hasn't failed them yet!

I have a tattoo on each side of my hips. But when I decided to have a baby it could possibly stretch...I hope not. I think they are low enough.
Personally I don't the placement of tattoos are what look trashy or slutty. It depends on the tattoo I think.

Well according to most "tattoo experts" lower back is trashy but I think it depends on what tattoo you get. I've also heard that the pelvis is trashy and shoulder blade is trashy so I'm not really sure who is making these rules and if its even peopel who have tattoos.
I got my family coat of arms on my lower back which I've just been informed is a tramp stamp but I think that's a pretty small minded attitude. If you like what you're getting then it doesn't matter where you get it, you're the one who'll see it most anyway and if people don't like it or where it is, they don't have to wear it!

If your worried about what ppl are gonig to think about your tattoo then maybe you should just nix the idea.
Tattoos are always exposed if you go to the beach or whatever...you just gotta decide if your getting it for your or for everyone else. If ti's for you get it where you want and who cares what ppl think.
I did that for my first two tat's on my back where I couldn't see them and tehy are covered. I said screw that and got the hugest sleeve done last week and now whenever I look in the mirror I see my beautiful work of art.

I have 15 tattoos, everywhere from between my shoulders, to the backs of my ankles, including ones around my nipples.
I'm not slutty, and I'm not trashy, either.
If I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt, you can't see any of them.
Thanks.

in my opinion, a trashy tattoo is one that is done poorly. not necessarily placement. tho i have never been a fan of breast tattoos. but it really all depends on the design and talent of the artist.

the only place that *sometimes* looks slutty is the lower back, depending on what the tattoo is. if it's all hearts and flowers and dolphins and junk, then it is called a "tramp stamp". i think tattoos are beautiful anywhere.
i have one on the back of my neck that i love because i can easily show it off (by wearing my hair up) or cover it (just by wearing my hair down).
