I have been paying 22% on all of the jobs I do, although my overall earnings are under my personal annual allowance. I am not self employed; I work for companies on a part time or casual basis. How can I go about claiming my tax back as my attempts every tax year so far have failed. I know I probably can't do this til April but want to prepare myself. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I have payslips and P60s and am eagerly awaiting a P45 for a job I recently left. All my work is above board, hence me paying this tax!!

One year, I only earnt about £2000 but still had to pay tax without a refund (this is when I was still in full time education and that income was from weekend work).

Why have your attempts failed? Have you received a P60 for the jobs you have worked? If not that is a problem for you. It is also illegal for an employer to deduct tax and not comply with the PAYE Regulations.

I don't usually recommend this, but have you tried going to your local tax office and sitting down with someone? Perhaps they can explain why they do not think you are eligible for a refund. If they cannot explain, speak to a Chartered or Certified Accountant. A first consultation should be free and they should be able to tell you the approximate cost of getting refunds and the size of refund you will receive. The trick is to tell them everything. It will be expensive if you leave anything out, as well as wasting your time.
