Small dogs that don't need alot of exercise might be:
13" beagle
Pug
Yorkshire Terrier
Boston Terrier
French Bulldog
My personal favorite is the Boston because they love to be with thier families, they are playful but not crazy. They are smart and easy to train and are relativley sturdy dogs. They are excellent with children and elderly people as well. As far as small dogs go, you won't find a better companion dog than a Boston. They aren't guard dogs but they will be perfectly happy to spend an afternoon curled up on the sofa with you.

Well that varies on what you want I would reccomend the following
If you want a Playful dog I would recceomdn a Jack russel Terrei.
If you want a family dog A Labador would be a good choice.
If you want a Hunting dog I would reccomend a Begal.
My Personal Favorite Is the Boston Terrei due to thats what I got
Shes not to hyper shes very loving not much of a hunter thoe.

small dogs are harder to take care of than bigger dogs. My mini requires more attention then my beagle, so it really all matters to how much time and energy you can and will use in a dog. Samll need tons of hugs and kisses always need to be held to be kept warm and in a comfort zone they like and they need food and water and probably another companion or as they grow up they will get grouchy with other dogs if they are not around them much.
Bigger dogs need love and kisses too but not as much, they just need the food and water and lots of playtime and walks then the smaller dog does.
so research breeds, talk to breeders and good luck!
P.S I have a mini dachshund and vote for you not to get one if you dont want a depressed looking dog when you dont hold it for five minutes lol

Spend this time researching all small breeds. It will teach you all of the pros and cons of each. The AKC has several great breeds you can check into. Good Luck. The fact that you are asking a year prior to buying shows you intend to be responsible. Make sure you have your new puppy spayed/neutered too. You seem very mature, more so than some forty year olds on this site..God Bless you!!!!!!! www.akc.org

Labs are great family dogs(I have 2), but can get large. Beagles are nice little dogs (I have 2 of them also) but like to run and can be noisey! Lots of "roooing" at whatever floats by and excites them. My son and his wife have a Cairn Terrier (ToTo on the Wizard of Oz) -I'd never seen one until they got her--sweet, smart little dog. Easily trained and really a joy to have around. She's very energetic tho and needs a lot of exercise and attention (as far as being played with). But I have said--if I'm ever without labs or beagley-boos----I'd have a ToTo dog.

There are so many to choose from...
Labrador Retriever
Cocker Spaniel
Yorkshier Terrier
Chihuahua
and the list goes on
Whatever you choose make sure you do some research on the dogs health history, aggressivness, activity and so on.
