The filly Regret in 1915. A daughter of leading sire Broomstick, she raced for the stable of Harry Payne Whitney.
Funny thing about the female Derby winners Regret, Genuine Risk and Winning Colors: for all that the best racemares tend to make the best broodmares, none of the the Derby-winning fillies has made any impact as a broodmare. Regret only had three foals: Nemesis, a filly by Johren; Penitent, a filly by Pennant; and Rueful, a filly by St. Germans. Genuine Risk, who at present is the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner, only had two foals: colts Count Our Blessing, by Chief Honcho, and Genuine Reward, by Rahy. Winning Colors has done a little better, having 9 foals by a variety of top stallions like Mr. Prospector, Broad Brush and Storm Cat, with one of her foals, Golden Colors by Mr. Prospector earning over $500,000 in Japan.
