This past year, I needed to put in for an extension in my taxes. I paid the small tax due, but I hadn't had time to track down some items, so I didn't want to file at that time. When I did track down everything, it turned out that everything was correct, so I neither owed more, nor was I due a refund. I believe I then filed (via paper filing) but I can't remember. I did print out a copy of my return which I have in my records. I would like to ensure I did file, so that all is clean with the IRS. Is there any way to check the status of whether I actually filed or not?

I looked on the IRS website, and it looks like there is a section where you can check on your refund, but I don't see anything where you can just check filing status when you are not due a refund.

This is why filing online is such a good idea. you get a confirmation, which you can print out. Actually you get two - one to say it has been transmitted and the other to say it has been accepted. If you keep a hard copy of those, you have no problem and don't have to wrestle with the IRS phone line.

Next year check out irs.gov and look for the Free File icon.

It is recommended that if you paper file, use certified mail.
You will get a reciept from the IRS after they receive it and the post office will give you a receipt as proof of mailing. You keep these with your copy of your tax forms.
If you take your forms to your local IRS office, they will stamp your tax form as received and make a copy of the first page for your records. They will process your return for you.
The toll free number to check refund satus should tell you if your return has been received or not or is being processed at the time of your call.

www.irs.gov (check my refund) and the toll free number are the only ways I beleive. You can contact the IRS directly by phone or email and they will give you the information that you need. Other than that, I dont know of another way. Not that there is not other, I am just not aware of one.
