The true origins of Santa Claus started with a Turkish monk. He came from a wealthy family and heard of a poor family that had no money for a dowry for there daughter. He left a sack of money on there door step anonymously. And did the same thing again when it came to there next daughter. The father on the third time waited to see who the generous person was, when he discovered it was the monk, the monk asked him to keep it a secret and there began the tradition of saint Nicolas. It was banned once it became a popular thing to do but Italian catholic nuns revived by leaving baskets of food and small items in secret in front of peoples doors. The Santa clause you recognize today with the white beard and red outfit was a creation of the coca cola company at the beginning of the century.

Father Christmas is from the Pagan Tradition, Christmas itself is celebrated on an old pagan festival. Jesus was not born in December. This is also the same with Easter, this is name after a pagan God. Many festivals with have today are based on old pagan festivals.

santa claus is German and means St. Nicholas, and early depictions of him show his festive clothing to be green and not red, of course since he has been hijacked and capitilized by Coca Cola then I would have to say that he is an American icon today and not German.
