I'm so sorry but, yes, it's true. It might not be so bad if the arena is heated, but cold air does exacerbate emphysema.. There are many treatments available that will help you manage it though, and help you be able to do things more easily, like watch your son play hockey. Inhaled Steroids (much like a puffer for asthma)Oxygen Therapy, Antibiotics, Protein Therapy, Surgery..

If you're going to go to your son's games without taking a treatment.. you can go, just wear a scarf around your mouth and nose to prevent the air from being really cold.. the scarf will warm the air.

My grandfather has emphysema. He found cold air helped his breathing, while warm air made it much more difficult.

Not a medical opinion I know, but that's what he said. He coached kids hockey too. But was pretty much shut inside in the summers with an air conditioner on.

Why not call your doctor's office and ask just to be sure.

I think that you can feel the effects of cold that can effect your breathing. Am not sure if that will make it worse though. My mom and father-in-law had it,my husband and his mom have it. His mom never smoked but was around smokers. I will suggest that if you are a smoker to quit though I can understand how hard that is for some. You can do it. Ask your doctor about the cold air. Maybe a mask like surgeons wear would be beneficial to breathing in the cold air. Good luck!
