Yes it is. Since our upper respiratory tract is teeming with microorganisms which causes the pneumonia disease, our body has its natural defenses, like the mucus secretions, which prevents the organisms into penetrating our lower respiratory tract. However, in smoking, the toxins given off by the smoke of the cigarette destroys these natural barriers which makes the person very susceptible to having Pneumonia or any other infections which are caused by microorganisms that are opportunistic; when the body's natural immune system is down. So better quit smoking before experiencing any of these life-threatening conditions.

No, pneumonia is caused by a virus or a bacteria. Non smokers can get pneumonia too. Copd or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which includes emphasema and asthma is caused primarily by smoking. However asthma isn't always. Asthma could be something aquired at birth as well.

I doubt that smoking alone is the underlying cause for pneumonia BUT I do know it doesn't help the situation any. Just as if your sick with the flu or broncitis, it makes your healing time twice as long because the toxins in cigs. makes it difficult to heal quickly, I know from experience unfortunately.
