There are lots of other ways to gain your childs trust and teach them to be responsable.... yes your kid may be responsable but what if someone took his knife and stabbed him with it???? it would fall on YOU for giving it to them ...... God luck bringing up your children if thats how your gonna do it...

I think a pocket knife is an okay gift for a child IF they only use it with supervision. It's good for camping and things. I think it's fine to teach a 10-year-old to use a knife responsibly. That's about the youngest I would go on the pocket knife and I'd prefer a little older, but I can see it. I'd never let them take it to school or take it outside to play by themselves or anything.

I remember once when a boy getting his first Swiss Army knife when he was 10 or 11 was a HUGE deal.. and parents weren't shunned for it at all.. and kids didn't hurt anything with them. I don't think that when these people were saying pocket knives that they mean a 6 inch butterfly knife.. but something like a Swiss Army Knife.. it's got a small 1 inch blade that isn't very sharp at all.. but it has lots of other little gadgets on it.. like a screw driver, a nail file.. etc..
Getting something like that used to be a source of pride for a parent and their son.... it's nothing meant to promote violence, it's just something to say " You're my son and I love you, and you're growing up."

Well, given the current big crack down on knife crime, I have recently come across a few people who have been convicted of Possession of a Bladed Article for *very* small knives - one was on a key-ring. These people are risking their child getting a criminal conviction - and ten is judged as the age of criminal responsibility in this country.
Personally, reading the case files on woundings and deaths involving knives on a regular basis, I feel that the fewer knives there are in circulation the better. The "responsible ownership" arguement holds as little water as it does when considering guns in the USA. It's not necessarily about what *you* (or your child) does with it, it's just as much about what other people do with it when they steal it from you or use it against you in an altercation.

Try not to judge people too quickly. In many parts of the country (Southern country living) it is perfectly normal for pocket knives or bb guns to be presents and they are taught how to use them with care. Maybe some kids are into boy scouts and they use that stuff with camping and hiking all the time. Lots of kids are outdoorsy type kids and have a good head on their shoulders. So don't pass judgement until you know the full story and hearing snippets on yahoo answers is not going to get you the full story.

There are lots of 10 year olds that are perfectly capable of using a pocket knife responsibly; any number of useful things can be done with them. Having grown up in a rural area I can tell you most country boys have pocket knives by the age of 12 and they aren't going around stabbing people with them.

Yes these people are mental. The reason 10 year olds dont like toys is because the parents cant be bothered interacting with them and teaching them the cool stuff you can make. Its much easier these days to shove them in front of the telly or computer game so the main influence in their lives is of violence. I am personally horrified by it. My nephew is one of these kids i am sorry to say although i got him some cool educational stuff last year (which he wants to do) his mother cant be bothered spending the time with him to supervise the activity so it is still on top of his wardrobe unopened (and she is a teacher) what chance have our kids got.

ive had toy guns since i was three, and i got a nice folding knife when i was 11. im 21 now, i still have knives and a coupld of air rifles and i go clay pigeon shooting. more emphasis is needed for parents to educate children about how these things are dangerous and should never be seen on the street etc. i was always told how dangerous these things can be and was always safe with them.

If my son joins the scouts when he gets older and needs one for camping etc then fine, but I wouldn't give him a penknife or any other knife otherwise. Its not what he would do with it, I would worry about another child getting hold of it and harming someone. After all you may trust your own child to be responsible but someone elses child ....

my brother had a pocket knife when he was 8 and I plan on giving my son one when he is 8.....as long as they taught to be responsible with it whats the problem. it would be a different story if I was to let him go to school with it, but kids especially boys love all that, sharpening sticks and cool stuff like that. My brother was also taught how to shoot by my dad. My brother is a great guy 2 fab kids and a lovely wife. I cant see the problem

Well, of course knives and kids don't mix, but before we start trying to educate our kids about being responsible citizens with a knowledge of what is right and what is wrong, maybe the asker of this question might like to learn the correct spelling of the the word "responsible"!
