A German by the name of Einthoven created the electrocardiogram (ECG) in the late 1800s using 3 electrodes (which record electrical activity) and had therefore 3 'leads'. This was expanded to 6 leads (using the arms and legs 3 leads are recorded unipolor and 3 leads bipolar) and finally to 12 with the addition of 6 'chest' leads. Indeed there are 12 leads and not 10. I have written an article of the history of the ECG if you would like a copy please let me know johnerussomd@jhu.edu
