Games are ALWAYS a hit!
Make up a theme. That always goes over well. A certain theme for dress, or a "character" party. Do a tacky formal, where you dress up in a tux, but tennis shoes or shorts, and sequins with rollers in your hair. Or do a Pajama party theme.
Have fun. Any board games are good, but "How to host a murder" is excellent. It's a Vincent Price game. Go to Target or Walmart and pick one up. Each game has a different scenario, and you send out invitations to each guest and they come as characters. It's kind of like a real life clue game, if you remember that one.
Hope it's a hit.
Doing roast beef is easy, because you just stick it in the oven, and carve it. Have some heavy cheese and bread to go with it, and you've got a heavy meal without hardly any work at all.

Never done sushi but I have had great success with this one.....Get 2-3 fondue pots and several pounds of GOOD beef that will be tender. Fill the pot with nearly boiling oil (with sterno under the fondue pot). Allow each guest to cook their own meal! Provide a number of sauces (horseradish, ginger, terriakie, ect....) I also put onion in the marinated meat so guest can cook this too. Mushrooms and peppers work well to just be sure to include them in the marinade. Most fondue sets include long forks to dip the meat into to oil. If your real adventurous you can serve a three couse fondue with cheese and bread, meat, and finishing with chocolate and cake/fruit. This ALOT of fun as guest can eat and drink and eat and drink. Due to the intimacy of the table settings alot of great conversation ensues. If electing just the meat all that is needed is a salad and baked potato (or other lite side). The meat and oil are very filling. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!

One idea, if you're really comfortable with your guests, is a variation on New Year's Resolutions. This works better after a bit of wine or something alcoholic. Each person must write down what they hope to accomplish or change in the coming year. Then you go around the group and each person must say one thing (not necessarily all they've written) they hope to accomplish or change. (This helps them feel like they're accountable to actually do something about it.) Then everyone burns their goals in the fireplace. You can also list things from this year that you want to leave behind and burn them. Often these spark nice discussion that is NOT small talk. Good luck with your party.

Movie night. Pick movies that most of them haven't seen or don't mind watching, fix popcorn, nachos or movie foods, and curl up in front of the T.V. This may not work since some people may have seen it, but it can be really fun. You could also have 3 couples to a game and play board games. Also separate into two groups girls and guys, and play interactive games. i.e charades, or the games that you have to guess a movie. have fun with it. I'm just a kid, but when my mom had a party she put some music on and everyone was doing the electric slide in the family room. Me and the other kids played video games.

Do something nobody has done in a while.
Get some nice cigars for the guys and some meat. They can fire the grill up in the garage / porch - drink beer, smoke cigars and complain about their wives.
The wives can drink their Pinot Grigios inside, make the appetizers and all that stuff they do.
Even if a guy is a non smoker - he will go outside with the guys rather than be inside with the skirts.
An hour goes by and the ice is broken - eat - another hour goes by - then your on your own.
The hardest thing about a party is the first two hours. Getting everyone talking, moving around.

Sushi might be hard. You can make candles or some craft. You could make pizza with premade crust. You can use boboli shells and eveyone can make their own pizza. You should have everything cut up prior. You could have a fire and rhost marshmellows. You could have a fondue party. There are restaurants where you cook your own food at the table. You could play pictonary of another game. You can play darts that is fun.

Buy some do it yourself food related things like a table top S'mores kit, make sushi at home, fondue, etc. You can always make something fun out of things like that..
Games that require you to be on large teams or battle against the sexes are fun too. And of course don't forget to bust out the cocktails!

I once went to a party where in each corner of a room, say the living room, was a different country, and you had to visit all the countries, and while you were there you drank and ate typical country fare. You try to go to all the countries and you must eat and drink from each one.
It was so much fun, and easy really, for example: Mexico- tequila and tacos, USA- Beer and hotdogs, France- Champage and cheese and crackers, Italy- pasta and wine. You can decorate with as much of little as you want, as long as people get the idea.
