I have had three root canals. The dentist goes through the procedure. He will deaden the area just like he always does for a filling or other work. He grinds the tooth away to expose the pockets housing the nerves (you won't be able to feel any of it). He then reams out the nerves with some really fine size files and cleans them the best he can. He then puts a temporary filling over the area and you wait a week to go back. He then deadens the area again, grinds away the filling, and reams out the nerve cavities a second time. The dentist then fills the tooth or makes a buildup for a crown, takes an impression, and puts on a temporary crown. If he has opted for the crown, two weeks later you get the permanent crown (no deadening the last time. I have heard of them going back in a third time, but mine were all finished after two visits. There was no more pain than a normal filling for me, but I have had people report that they had some mild discomfort afterward (nothing severe). If you are apprehensive about it, you can have him administer gas before the deadening step - that takes the edge off of everything. Good luck.

A root canal does not hurt physically but it will hurt your pocket. I've had three and eventually had to have the tooth pulled anyway. So it's best to have it pulled if it's not in the front. A root canal can cost $700, and to pull one is about 95.

No more than getting a filling done. The worst part is keeping your mouth opened so long while they work on the tooth. Mine took about eight hours covering two sessions.

If the tooth has an ifection it may hurt even if doctor has tried to numb the area. If the nerve is already dead you won't feel a thing, but pressure and lot of noise.

Oh no...they numb up your gums around your tooth. i had one in one of my front teeth...so no it don't hurt.
But after you get a root canal...becarefule with you tooth with how you brush and don't eat hard foods and candy. If you are going to eat something hard like a candy...then avoid the tooth that got the root canal. Your tooth becomes brittle after you get it done because your tooth is no longer alive...its dead.

The dentist doesn't feel a thing.
Seriously... I had six or seven of them (not all at once!).
If you get the right amount of anesthesia (Novocaine or whatever) it won't hurt...
... but it is uncomfortable having someone poking around in your mouth that much and keeping your mouth open that long.

Not getting it done. It;s a little tender afterwards. I didnt think it was nearly as bad as everyone says. Getting a tooth pulled is a LOT worse

Well for most people it's a most painfull procedure. It kind of differs from person to person of exactly how much pain they might be in.
