BTW, Japanese people generally think that water in other countries might not fit their body and cause some sickness. This could be a reason why they did not try to drink water there. Depends on the dialect
the native Japanese word for water is mizu while the Sino-Japanese word is sui. Both are written with the same character. The former is known as the kun yomi (Japanese reading) of the character while the latter is known as the on yomi (Chinese reading) of the character.

"mizu" is water in Japanese
"no mi mo no" = drinks
"o hi ya" = cold water (when you order cold water in restaurants)
"kai sui" = sea water while the kanji "sui" pronouns in onyomi (Chinese phrase) "mizu" is original Japanese pronounciation of the word - kyoyomi
