I need someone who has a tried and true method or a product out there I may be able to spray my tree with (it's artificial) prior to hanging ornaments to discourgae my cat from playing with the ornaments. Please do not suggest spraying him with a water bottle, because that'll only work while I'm home! My friend was able to find a bitter apple spray to spray on different items to keep her dog from chewing stuff...is there any kind of spray like that out there to repulse a cat? I'm thinking if I could spray it with something that will offend him (but not me nor my company) then he won't even think of going near it! Or if not a spray....any other ideas? He's 7 months old and is very playful and curious and smart, too! Any ideas out there or useful sites about cats I could visit? Thanks (I'll also be chosing best answer myself)

To those suggesting I hit him...I'd like to find you and hit you! You don't hit a cat for being curious...it's their natural instinct to sneak and jump at items they think are prey. ugh!! If I hit my cat I wouldn't be looking for alternatives to keep him from the tree!

And not putting one up isn't an alternative either because my kids would miss the tree. Ba hum bug!

The bitter apple spray is what my friend used to keep her dog from chewing, I didn't think it was effective on cats, actually I didn't know. Only problem is my vet doesn't carry it, does anyone know where I may be able to find it online? Or again, if anyone knows of any other spray that I could use that is non toxic and doesn't stink to people, let me know, please.

I'm looking for a solution for when I'm NOT home...that's pretty mcuh the whole idea. Caging him isn't an option neither is booting him out the door like someone else suggested. I am humane to animals I keep....ask my hubby...he...he

My cat thinks that my Christmas tree is a huge toy for him! I used bitter apple spray and it works wonders. Try it out. You can usualy get it at any local pet store or vet clinic.

The best way to keep cats away from trees is to enclose the tree in a plexiglass case. You can spend a lot of money between now and the time you take the tree down on all kinds of stuff and still not find something that will work. You can put down lemon and orange peels that will draw roaches, if you live in a city, or ants if you live where it is warm, or both maybe. You can spray the cat and hit the light wires and cause an electrical short, maybe burn your house down. BUT, by then Christmas will be over, won't it?

And then, you will have a cat who is freaked out from getting sprayed with water, maybe peeing around the house from stress urination. It sounds like fun, doesn't it?

Well, you could try the pepper sprinkle trick too, but if you have small kids, be sure to stay ready to flush their eyes, it doesn't just bother cats' noses, it stings when kids touch it and touch their eyes. Kids like to be near trees too.

it truly is an age previous conflict. right it truly is the in straight forward words answer besides status preserve over your tree 24 hours an afternoon: a million. at the same time as the cat is interior - positioned the tree outdoors. 2. at the same time as the cat is outdoors, deliver the tree decrease back interior. OKOK, that change into only for exciting....Our expensive cats have a lot exciting when we set up the genuine tree - we frequently enable them have it. Cats in the Christmas tree truly deliver out the exhilaration of Christmas - - that is like the tree that keeps on adorning itself -- from time to time there's a cat on the bottom, from time to time there's a cat on the accurate, from time to time all we see are tails sticking out, from time to time we see faces. So ok we are massive dummies, yet our cats had a lot exciting earlier we were able to pull the decorations out -- that we purely not in any respect fairly complete the tree.... sturdy success!! and maximum of all, save in thoughts cats are human beings too and picture in case you've been a cat and ultimately someone delivered in a actual stay PIECE OF CAT fixtures INTO the abode? How inspired might want to you be which include your people???

I have a tabletop tree in my apartment, thus no problem with Tika(my cat) knocking it over. Trying to keep a cat away from the Christmas tree is most of the time is a losing battle.

And roy-glen...Hitting a cat does absolutely NOTHING as far as discipline is concerned. Better to use a can full of coins with the top taped on...leave it where you don't want the cat to jump on..the can gets knocked over and the sound of the coins sends the cat packing..away from where they're not supposed to be. Soon they learn to avoid getting into things they're not supposed to. All hitting does is teach the cat that it cannot trust humans. That's how many cats are unfortunately abused and end up running away from the abusers and ending up in shelters.

Stopped putting up a tree years ago, our cat at the time liked to climb in and give the tree a good shakedown. He knew the tree was off limits but when you turned your back it was to much fun to resist the temptation to try it anyway. I actually do not miss having a tree at all, it just a ritual and my cat is more important than a having a dying tree in the house.

Ive heard that you can up aluminum foil under the tree cats don't like the sound of it under their feet, our only seem to want to get in the tree when we are home for attention so the water bottle is working for us, good luck with whatever you do!
