My mother used to live in a city in/by Rome, and was close to the beach. I am unsure of the spelling, but is something like: Lango Maray/Marai...can anyone help?

What you're remembering seems to be not the name of the city by Rome but of a place along the seaside. There are no cities or villages by Rome whose names sound like your spelling, but here in Italy we call all the places alongside the sea "lungomare" (seaside) and this in the American pronunciation "langomeir" sounds very close to yr memory.
ps - after yr additional comment it became very easy.
The small town is OSTIA LIDO and it's the resort closest to Rome.

I think you mean LUNGOMARE, which is not a town, but a way to say ALONG THE BEACH. Maybe the city you're looking for is Fregene.
