My diabetes educator gave a months worth of samples but I'm not sure whether to take them or not because the drug is so new. For one thing, anyone remember Vioxx and Celebrex? Didn't those drugs kill people? and also since it's so new it won't be in any insurance formulary. So I was wondering, should I give her the samples back and ask for something else to handle my sugar spikes?

No Vioxx did not kill people and the company has successfully defended itself in court. Celebrex is still available and it does not kill either. Although sitagliptin (Januvia) is new it has been extensively studied and I have used it since the 1st day it was available. Sitagliptin (and several related 'gliptins' will soon be available) is a tremendous advance in the treatment of diabetes allowing us to more closely regulate the increase in gluocse seen after eating. I am not aware of any real health concerns or side effects related to sitagliptin. I would take it.

What are you taking now? If you're having spikes then she must think this will help. I've heard of Januvia and honestly am quite interested in it, I now take Avandia and am under good control. I think as long as you're under the care of a doctor plus the diabetes educator you're safe. I understand the qualms of a "new drug", just make sure to call them if something doesn't feel right, ask all the questions, make sure your concerns are addressed!

Januvia is good and some insurance companies do cover it because it is for diabetes

my advice is stay away form it until its worked out its kinks so you probably want to wait at lease 6 more months before trying it
