Would like to hear how other parents have gone through this too and any suggestions on how to put up a tree and presents but still keep 11 month old safe. She is very active crawling and sort of walking

Wow a lot of great ideas! Thanks to the suggestions we decided to put up a tree.
We are leaning toward putting it in her playpen or at least blocking it with the playpen and a big chair.

go for it. put the ornaments up a little higher. tell them no, dont touch. you have to teach them boundries and what to touch and what not to touch.

I'm in the exact same boat! We have a 7 month old who's crawling and starting to try and walk...I really dreaded doing the tree this year although it's my fav part of xmas. Anyway, we did some living room rearranging and set up the tree between our couch and a chair -- The we used the ottoman to sort of "block" between them when the baby is out and moving around. It's set up easy enough though that when the baby goes to sleep, we can just push the ottoman back into it's place at the foot of the chair and we have a pretty shot of the tree. Good Luck!
PS- I've also seen in magazines where people use those safety baby gates all around the tree.

I've got a 1 1/2 year old a 2 1/2 year old and a 7 year old. As that they don't go in the play pen, last year the tree went in the playpen. Worked ok. and we took it out for christmas.

This year the tree is free, we just limited the decorations to lights, bows and a red and gold ribbon garland wrapped spiraling up the tree. I like the free tree better.

Get some pretty colored cardboard boxes to put under the tree (the preprinted christmas ones). keep the real ones safe.

could you maybe get a small tree and put it on a coffee table or something so that it is out of harms way. Or if you have a spare bedroom maybe you could display it in there and keep the door shut when the baby is crawling around. The other thing is to maybe put up a baby gate and put the tree inside of that the one that the use to keep a baby or puppy in. I know it will look kind of tacky but I can't think of anything else but to keep that baby safe

what about a "cuter" alternative to a baby gate around the tree?

Get some cute picket fencing, cut it down 1/3, stain or paint it. Then put it together in a square u shape. After that, create a little "scene" behind it - your tree, the gifts etc. If you used it full hight, you could decorate the fence as if it were your outdoor fence with lights and bows and fake greens. Next year , when the little guy is older, you could use this in your front yard as Christmas decor.

My friend did this around her wood stove and it was darling. Her hubby put a gate in it for them to get in and out easily and added a base to make it sturdy.

I've got 3 kids running around. A 3 year old, a 2 year old and a 1 year old. For the past 3 years we've used either a small live tree or a small fake tree and placed it on a high piece of furniture (entertainment center or a dresser). It works great so far.....well except for my 3 year old figured out how to move a chair and opened a couple presents last week. But it may have been a fluke because I told him if he opened his presents again that santa clause wouldnt bring him NO MORE PRESENTS. LOL!!!

If you are planning to have a floor tree then you could get a gate. There is a gate made by SUMMER and it is like a super yard except it is netting and cloth instead of complete metal. They are nice we have one but it can go around the perimeter of the tree. I have an almost 1 yr old and decided it just isnt worth the headache this year so I am just getting a table tree. He will see trees enough at families homes and then they can deal with the headache!

Put up your tree! Your baby will enjoy looking at it and the lights and it will be a nice memory for all of you for her first Christmas. We got a regular tree (nice and big!) and put baby gates around it when the baby was in the room. It worked pretty well, not the greatest to look at but at least we had our tree! We also put the ornaments higher up and didn't put the gate up when we were all in the room together so that she could learn her boundaries and what no means.

Have a great holiday!

I have a 1 year old and a 5 year old, and have been in your situation twice.I would not recommend putting the tree on furniture for obvious reason. We put our tree in a corner of the room and positioned a couch on one side and a love seat on the other. Then I put the coffee table in front of the tree. This blocked them from getting to it.I would also put any small or breakable ornaments above your baby's reach just in case they make it to the tree. You can buy covers to go over outlets that have things plugged in also. This would keep baby from unplugging lights and getting shocked. If you can't block the tree w/furniture perhaps you could put a baby gate up to keep them from going in the room all together.Remember the tree is going to be like the biggest, coolest toy they have ever seen.It is most definitely going to get their undivided attention.

My baby is 8 months old and has now started crawling. I had to get a smaller tree and put it on a table. I'm just gonna leave the presents put up until Christmas Eve

This may sound dorky, but here goes...When my daughter was younger and was just learning how to pull herself up to things, we were told to put our Christmas tree in a playpen so it was out of her reach. It worked even though it was very dorky looking. If she happened to pull herself up to the playpen and look at the tree, we didn't have to worry about it falling on her.

We only had to do it one Christmas and then she didn't bother it anymore after that. We had to put our presents in our closet that year so she didn't get into them. These are things we did to try to keep our daughter safe and things untouched.
