I thought stem cell research was done on the umbillical cord from babies who have just been delivered is that correct or not?

partly. stem cells can be obtained from a fetus or umbillical cord. they are the most basic type of cell that all other cells originate from. in theory these cells can be formed into "properly functioning cells" that can some day help prevent/cure/treat diseases and abnormalities. the debate is mostly over the fear of having "baby factories" inorder to get stem cells and the morality of using cells that have come from a fetus.

The biggest part of the controversy is because we can clone these stem cells, and that is akin to creating a duplicate life... something most governments have banned.

They can also be used from aborted fetus'.

That's what everyone who is anti-choice is screaming about.
