Furosemide (Lasix) is an out of date drug and its continued use shocks me. Bumetanide and torsemide are much preferred and this is especially true for those with cirrhosis. All of the drugs of this type must be prescribed with hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) to preserve their efficacy. 'High' doses of furosemide sucy as you are taking is not unusual when HCT is not used and also as the action of furosemide is so brief. Excessive doses may lead to a loss of sodium, potassium, water, as well as other metabolic abnormalities. Please discuss bumetanide and torsemide with your physician and if they do not understand why these are preferred you might seek another opinion.
