A lot of diseases don't have cures, but nearly all of them have a preventative. Currently, for instance, there is no "cure" for yellow fever, typhoid, measles, mumps, chicken pox, diptheria, small pox, polio, malaria, etc. That's why we treat water, kill mosquitos, practice good hygiene, and take vaccinations. Those are preventatives- not cures. In the case of HIV, the prevention is using a condom or abstaining. Just because they don't like the preventative measures or won't use them is not a problem the rest of us should be expected to deal with or pay for. While we can certainly fund research for a better preventative, folks may just have to adapt to the fact that there are no diseases that are actually cureable, only preventable, and if they choose not to prevent then they have to live (or die) with the consequences of that choice.

The AIDS epidemic in Africa is frightening indeed. Currently there are antiretroviral drugs which can control but not cure HIV infection. There is, however, a promising new treatment based on lentiviruses that can disable an existing HIV infection and permanently cure the condition. To my knowledge it has only been tested on five people to date, but initial tests are promising -- check back in ten years or so.

Dropping like flies eh? From what I have read we are very close to finding cures for many diseases. I would say at least 15-20 years we should be much closer by then.

it depends, a cure the already have for most diseases, but why would they loose trillions of $$. If cancer and aids was cured the pharmaceutical companies and health care industry would cause massive economic failures. Not to mention a serous problem with population explosion causing economic strain and resource depletion. So, when do you think? Also the FDA is letting allot of harmful chemicals into the food chain and medication so that the population is curbed. It is what it is.
