They call ground beef "hamburger" because ground beef is used to make hamburger patties which are placed in a bun and called collectively "a hamburger."

The history has something to do w/ the Earl of Hamburg in Germany or something....

They don't call ground beef 'hamburger'.

A Hamburg steak was & is a fake steak made of minced low-grade beef. This was originally so that poorer German people could enjoy a steak too. It was, of course, originally created in Hamburg.

Then, long after it was taken to America by some of the poorer Germans who used to eat it, it was stuck in a low-low-low -grade bap and renamed 'hamburgER'!
