Additional history would be helpful such as health conditions and medications he is taking. If he is a smoker ask him to stop. There are medications for peripheral circulation but they are of limited effectiveness. Depending upon the origin of the problem surgery is sometimes curative. It should be emphasized however that an exercise program for this purpose leads to a significant improvement in function independent of any actual change in circulation. Finally - I assume that he has undergone testing and that this is not simply an impression but rather a diagnosis.

Omega-3 fatty acids appear to have protective functions in preventing the formation of blood clots and in reducing the risk of heart disease but they don't improve circulation. Iron is good for anemia but doesn't improve circulation either. A low-fat, low total cholesterol diet that includes a multivitamin-mineral balance will do more for preventing circulation problems along with no smoking, moderate drinking and exercise. Walking is excellent and so are aerobics. Elevating the legs above heart level when sitting promotes venous blood return to the heart. And if your father was prescribed any medications, taking them faithfully will also help promote better circulation.

Even the wrong clothing can hurt. Socks with a tight or narrow elastic band at the top can bind and cut off circulation. Tight shoes do the same to the feet.

100% pure olive oil gently massaged into the legs and feet is supposed to increase the blood circulation. I have tried it for increasing circulation in my feet with good results.

YES! Start a walking program, start out slow, and over time add more walking. Take short quick steps so as to not put stress on the joints. Take omega fatty acids,(fish oil) which helps inflamation, and also helps circulation. I know, it's done miracles for me! :) arum
