I recently came upon a video wherein an Atheist, tired of being awoken on Saturday mornings by local Mormons takes to the streets to see how the shoe feels on the other foot.
http://www.break.com/index/door_to_door_atheists_bother_mormons.html
My question is thus: With so many faiths going door to door nowadays (I've had my doorbell rung by baptists, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and a few others.)
I'm neither Atheist nor Mormon, and I certainly don't appreciate doorbell ringers, but is this really necessary? Why go door to door? For every door that get slammed in your face, do you get closer to heaven? This is sincere, not derrogatory.
Yes, Christians, I know the bible tells you to go out and let people know about Jesus, but that doesn't mean stalking people in their homes. I'm sure the people out there, who WANT to learn about Jesus, will come to you!

whapingmon: What a beautiful and moving story. I'm so sorry you have been threatened so, and I am always as caring and polite as I would want someone to be to me, if I were in their shoes.
I'm glad you have found a faith that works for you. Blessed be.

Pinkadot: If you had read All of the text, I'm sure you'd see that I'm not Mormon, or Atheist. I have never visited a stranger's home to convert them to ANY faith.

WaterBugGirl: that verse says 35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. "
It does NOT say, Jesus went from house to house, waking people up at the crack of dawn on Saturday to preach at them.

I have not always been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). I am a convert who was taught by two young missionaries. While I was not looking for or even remotely interested in God, I will be forever grateful for the two elders who sacrificed two years of their life to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.
So, why do they go door to door? They go to find people like me, knowing that the worth of souls is great in the sight of God. I have since served a two-year mission. I had doors slammed in my face, rocks thrown at me, and my life threatened at machete point. Yet I would go again if it would help even one person to accept the Savior.
I hope that this helps.

When I lived in Oregon, there were 2 Mormon's that were pretty persistent. They kept coming by and, since I had a life then, I was never there at the same time.
When I was packing a U-Haul (which was prominently displayed in the drive-way), they still asked if I wanted to hear 'the good word'. So, I politely informed them I was moving to Texas and they offered to have some missionaries there get in touch. Stunning. I would say reason would eventually stop them but apparently not.

I have no problem with people witnessing door-to-door so long as they don't come too early or too late and take no for an answer when I politely tell them I'm not interested.
If I were having a large number of religious witnesses coming to my door, I'd put up a polite sign indicating that I'd rather not be bothered. I wouldn't pretend that two wrongs make a right and take to the streets myself.

It is sad when anti-religionists describe Christian canvassing as "stalking people in their homes".
A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is "necessary to get in to heaven". In fact, the vast majority of Jehovah's Witnesses do not hope to be resurrected to heaven, and would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!
That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.
(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.
Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:
(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

Just being good neighbors I presume; it is apparently the duty of those who have been warned to warn thier neighbor. It doesn't bother me much, although I would appreciate a knock instead of a ring. I enjoy talking to those of other faiths and try to always welcome them in as it opens my eyes to what others' believe. My wife doesn't enjoy it quite so much. I think it's impressive all the hard work these people put in to try and help those who they consider their brothers and sisters to find salvation; the Jehovah Witnesses are the most impressive because every member goes out. Anyway, sorry it's a bother to you, but it's one of those great joys of having freedoms.

In our church, Baptist, we call on people who have visited our church, to see if we can help them, or give more info.
If we are having a special event like a kid's club in a neighborhood, we knock on doors, handing out flyers with info. But we don't bang on anonymous doors and force our way in, like some others. It has been tried in the past - it was dropped because it doesn't work.

While I have no answer for why the door to door, how can he be sure he was getting only the people who woke him up? What if he got innocent people, which would just annoy those people (and give them less then fuzzy thoughts on atheists). If you're going for revenge, don't drag innocent people in it. And no, I didn't view the link. I don't do links to vids, sorry.

I'm an atheist and I think that people shouldn't try to push their beliefs/disbeliefs on others, especially not by going door to door and troubling people in their homes in an attempt to convert them. It does more bad than good.
