That's a really sad story. I am from the UK (but lived in NYC for a while), and I thought there were organisations that helped in cases like this; surely a person can't be allowed to fall ill (and perhaps die) when residing in a rich, powerful country like the USA? Perhaps your nearest hospital, or doctor's office would advise you on what to do in such a case. Or maybe you have something like a 'citizen's advisory bureau' in the city which might put you in contact with help? Good luck anyway. (This question makes me feel very grateful for our UK health service.)

I am sure that there are available clinics there but I would say to first contact a doctor and ask him/her to contact one of the drug companies. There are programs available for just such an instance that the medical community has access to. JUST ASK THEM!! I saw a commercial on TV about this and found the site. Check it out below.
