Hypertension is a consistent elevation of systemic arterial blood pressure (values greater than 140/90) The top number is called the systolic blood pressure, the bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure. More than 80 million Americans have hypertension.

Hypertension is caused by increases in cardiac output (The amount of blood pumped by the heart increases), total peripheral resistance (when blood travels through arteries, it must be 'pushed' through, similar to filling a water balloon. The force that pushes the blood through the arteries is total peripheral resistance.) or a combination of both.

Some risk factors (events that increase the chances of having hypertension) are family history of hypertension, smoking, obesity, high-fat low-fiber diet, heavy alcohol consumption, men younger than 50 and women older than 60, individuals with diabetes.

When blood pressure remains high for a period of time, the arteries are damaged by the force exerted on them. The walls of the arteries form a type of buildup called plaque. This buildup of plaque over time will decrease the inside of the artery and therefore require more force to push the blood through the artery.
The continual increase in pressure also thickens the 'muscular' walls of the arteries (called fibromuscular thickening).

Once the walls of the arteries thicken, high blood pressure and hypertension are in most cases permanent.

Primary hypertension is an idiopathic disease, which means it does not have a known cause. What we do know is that there are some risk factors that include genetic factors, a sedentary lifestyle and salt.

The main cause of secundary hypertension is a stenosis of the renal artery.

if you have consistent high blood pressure levels you should have certain tests carried out at the hospital,
1 ECG
2chest xray, these rule out problems with the heart such enlargement or heart failure which could increase blood pressure.
3 weight
4 lifestyle
5 family history
6 chemical imbalance such as cortisol which is produced by the puturity gland, these from time to time (rare) get tiny tiny tumours (benign) on them which can be removed. this will decrease the blood pressure level. with high blood pressure it should be check out and investigated as this can cause damage to other organs in the body.
