You have to want to quit so much - you have to make it the most important thing in your life. Your health is more important than anything - what are you without your health? If anything bad happens don't use it as an excuse to start smoking again - just say to yourself 'at least I didn't smoke today' If not smoking is your main goal in life then each day that you don't smoke is a successful day, no matter what else has happened in that day

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

I'm in the process of quitting although I didn't want to really but my lungs were screaming for me to stop and I had a chest infection. I have reduced my cigarette intake from 30 - 40 roll-ups to just 1or 2 cigarettes which I save for late evening as my reward.
Weekends are really hard, but I'm getting through the days okay, Not too pleased about the sore throat I've got and the crap I keep coughing up but at least your question has allowed me to get all this off my Chest ! and Well done.

I tried the same method myself and have ow given up for 3 years.
The problem is the people that give up smoking with the help of patches, gum, self help books and so on would have actually given up without them.
Unless you really want to give up then you wont.
Most people don't actually want to give up and that's why they always go back to smoking and then moan about how hard it is.
Don't get me wrong is was no walk in the park but was nowhere near as hard as i heard it was.
Gum and patches are owned by the cigerette companies, just another way to get money out of us

After the initial chemical is out of your system, it's more about the psychological addiction, which is where the tools come into place. I am quitting right now and believe me, while I'm not gonna buy a stupid book, I need all the support I can get.

Yeah but people are different and some find it easier with certain aids like books or whatever. Whether its psychological or not I dont know but so what if people want extra help apart from their own will power to stop??What are ya looking for a blue peter badge or sumthin?!!

I have to agree with that one! Will power and nothing else..the rest is a giant money making business, with pharma & tobacco companies walking hand s in hands.

Quit 4 years ago and ve never looked back.

I'm trying to quit smoking and miss it terribly, but you are right. You have to really makeup your mind to quit.
