If you have Parkinson's, they're something wrong with your body right? Something's missing.
Stem cells are embryos that haven't been ... specialized yet. So they could still be anything.
This way, you can make the stem cell adapt to what you need -
missing a nerve cell? a couple? grab some stem cells.
something's up with your spinal cord? grab some stem cells.
except that research for this is illegal, because it's kinda of like killing unborn babies. There's a whole controversy over it.
Stem cells can be a repair kit for your body. To save an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's. To save an alcoholic with a badly damaged liver - without organ donations. To repair the skin of a child burned all over in a fire at age 5.
And so on.
Scientists also want to use stem cells to test different kinds of drugs. But mostly stem cells are wanted to help those with those kinds of diseases and conditions.

I have been a diabetic since October 1966. I want to thank you!! I pride myself for keeping up on all of the information that is published on diabetes and all of the "new stuff" that comes out. However, I had not read anything about the stem cell transplants until your question. I found a fantastic site with loads of information that I would like to share with you and anyone else that will read this. SHARE it with OTHERS!! I will list the site below to save space here. It appears that the stem cells are being used to reproduce cells in the isle of langarens where the insulin is produced. The sad fact is they do not seem to be using it until a person is already having complications from diabetes and I think that we should be beginning such treatments EARLY!! I have always thought that pancreatic transplants should be a last resort because the immuno-suppressants are very hard on a person and they want the person to stay away from the general public because of the possibility of becoming ill as a result of those suppressants.
I would like to say here that I DO NOT believe that we should be 'murdering children' to get embryonic stem cells when adult stem cells are just as useful. I am not able to say much more on this topic. I hope that this is helpful to you.
Later,
Eds

They are undifereintiated cells that can give rise to any cell. It is hard to convince other people because so tie abortion to it. since some of the cells come from fertility clinics or abortion clinics. Some people beleive that since the spern and the egg have joined, it is a fetus (baby).
