I have a diabetic friend who's only 27 and she didn't want to be a slave to pills also. She's very careful about her diet. Staying away from white pasta and breads, switching to whole wheat. No tomato sauces though, very high in sugar. She eats alot of protein. Walking is also very good, since it's burning all that sugar. Invest in an insulin level kit, so your dad can check his levels reguarly. Bottom line is he has to be very strict about his diet and excersing. It can work. Good luck and God bless.

If he eats well and exercises everyday he may be able to reduce the pills or eliminate them but only under a doctors supervision. People with diabetes need to exercise and eat the same amount same time everyday so the pancreas can release the insulin and a schedule helps fine tune that. Have your Dad speak with a diabetes educator they help lots. He takes the pills because he does not make enough insulin naturally my son would trade him in a heartbeat he has been on injections all his life and he is 12.

He can actually make the diabetes better by exercising everyday. Take a walk for 30 minutes a day, or go for a swim..Do some sort of activity.
Also he can help his diabetes by eating a good balanced meal with unrefined sugar. A diabetic needs to stay away from (refined sugars) such as junk food, fried food, fatty foods, sweet food, soda, etc.
Tell your dad to eat low-fat meats(chicken, turkey, fish, pork, beef, lamb, etc), vegetables, fruits, whole wheat breads, brown rice, oatmeal, low-fat milk, and low fat cheeses. And tell your Dad to eat junk food and sweets in moderation.
Good Luck

Eat less rice and more wheat, ragi, and oats based food.
Lot of vegetables can be eaten, bitter gourd juice, neem juice
and durba grass juice taken in empty stomach daily morning help keep the sugar level down.
Above all, excercise is very MUST--- brisk walking both in the morning and evening about 30-40 min each, should be done.
Control weight , eat less oily food,

Reduce on carbohydrate and sugar intake. There are some stages of Diabetes that really need medication. Ask your doctor if it is not that stage before you stop his medications. The succeeding complications of untreated diabetes are numerous and could proved to be fatal and life threatening. It is better to be patient with the pills than to loose one leg or loose an organ
