I assume that you are speaking of a child with type 1 diabetes in which case the only treatment is insulin often in the form of an insulin pump. Diabetes is not fun but beginning about 5 years ago really good insulins have become available. We now have nearly ideal basal insulin (to control fasting glucose) and truly rapid acting insulins (to control after meal glucose). There are a variety of pen systems and pumps available. All of the machines to test for blood glucose are equally good. Joslin in Boston has a nice website. Type in Joslin Diabetes and click Search.

My son is on Lantus and Humalog insulin . He takes Humalog 3x a day with meals according to how many carbs he eats. Lantus is at bedtime. He gives his own injections as he was taught well when diagnosed at 10 yrs. old. He is 16 now and it is second nature to him. He has had alot of different blood sugar monitors, but currently uses Accucheck Active. It sometimes depends on your insurance and what they will cover, but they are all pretty similar.By the way, my son was taking way more insulin than most people his age and it was discovered that he is a rare case that has Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes so he also now takes a Metformin pill that helps his body absorb his insulin better as he was insulin resistant.

My son is type I and we have carbohydrate counting minus fiber along with the glycemic food index and we have a insulin pump. We use the freestyle test meter because you can get blood from fingers, arms and legs in smallest amount. We notice spikes when he grows, gets sick and looses or gets teeth. You need to work extremely close with a diabetes educator. Since my son was diagnosed at 8 1/2 months there has been so many improvements in meters, insulin, needles, and diet. The pump was the best thing to controll his numbers and give him more of a normal lifestyle.
