Yes, but environment also plays a large role. If you suspect you are pre-diabetic, there are foods you can eat and a lifestyle you can live that will make less likely you will "flip" to becoming a diabetic.

For some basic info on hypoglycemia - a pre-diabetic condition, check out www.hufa.org. The main pre-diabetic condition is high insulin production (hyperinsulinemia). You can search the www.mayoclinic.com website for some good info on that condition.

Yes there is a hereditary component to diabetes but not all cases have a genetic basis so it is not possible to say if your Dad's is genetic nor exactly what your risk is. In type 1 diabetes in twins if 1 has diabetes the other has a 50% likelihood of developing diabetes. Your Dad is type 2 and the genetics here is actually stronger but not at all understood and as noted above we are not able to test 'genes' to determine a risk for type 2 diabetes. The best advice is to stay lean, eat a good diet, and exercise regularly. Fortunately treatment options have never been better.

type 2 is but not so much w/type 1. I am a type 1 and I have been told by my endocrinologist, family Dr. my kids Dr, and my diabetes educator (both of them) that there is only a 3 to 5 % chance of my kids getting it. But if I was type 2 then the chances are at least 30%

Diabetes can be hereditary. You do not have to get diabetes even if your father has it. You can do things to avoid it and to live a healthier, happier and more energetic life than you dad. By the way, he can improve his blood sugar by doing what I am going to tell you as well.

Learn about counting carbohydrates. The nutrition labels on food give you all the information about that particular food. You need to look at 2 things on the nutrition label. 1. the serving size and 2 the amount of grams of carbohydrates in that serving size.

The formula you need to follow is: 15 Grams of carbohydrates equal 1 CARB. Remember that formula.

For the next week, check out the carbs on the nutrition labels, but continue to eat the way you normally would eat. Count up those grams of carbs/carbs.

At the end of that week, cut the number of carbs you eat in half. For the next 2 weeks eat half the amount of carbohydrates that you normally would eat. You will find that your energy levels are way, way up, your weight will come down.

You need to get out and exercise - at least 30 minutes a day - 3 days a week minimum (5 days a week is best).

Watch your carbs and exercise. This is the way you prevent diabetes. You make this a new lifestyle for yourself - if you don't do this, you have an excellent chance of developing diabetes as you get a little older.

If your dad will watch his carbs and exercise, his blood sugars will improve dramatically -- He MUST TALK TO HIS DOCTOR BEFORE DOING ANY CHANGES TO HIS LIFESTYLE! If he is on insulin or even oral meds, he could send his blood sugars low by eating to little carbs. The doctor will need to adjust his meds and give his/her approval to this change.

My husband was diabetic for 25 years. I now teach diabetics how to lower their blood sugars and live better lives.

It is all in your control. - Go for it!

all my readings have led me to believe that it does run in families but I think, down the road, it will be seen to be so because we learn how to act and react from the behaviors we see modeled around us... we can develop a way of thinking that's disrupted and that results in behaviors that can be disruptive to life flow... I truly think it is more that than heredity... if that is indeed shown to be the case, then all the children of parents with mental health issues would be affected, you might counter... to answer that, not every child has the same sensitivity... disposition... some have a thicker skin, are not as impressionable as others... some subconsciously fight hard against the negative impact and some just go with the flow and pick up the maladaptive behaviors learn about the diagnosis and its warning signs, the self-tests... learn about it and you will be able to address any early symptoms, should they arise, before they become debilitating best of luck with this WHOA!! after I hit submit, I read the other contributions... I can't be way off track... so many folks touched on the same notions... feels good! Rock on, fellow journeymen! :-D

Yes it is but they say that the child of a diabetic has only a 2% chance of getting it. My husbands Dr also told him that the mother is usually the one that passes the gene to the child. I really don't know it was on both sides of my family so I got it.

It can be. However, my grandmother was diabetic and she was the first person in our family to have it. If you want to reduce your chances of being diabetic, eat healthy, exercise, take care of yourself. Hope this helps!

Yes diabetes can be inherited or environmental or a gene mutation, but the good news is it can be prevented. Being overweight not exercising and having poor eating habbitts contribute to the onset. Talk to your parents and see a doctor who can help you get on the prevention track.
