My 15-week old puppy (weight 16 lbs) just swallowed whole a piece of rawhide about 1 inch long, skinny (one of those sticks). Do I need to worry?

30 mins since... no swelling, puking, odd behaviour. Giving him lots of water and he is eating. I'm staying home a few more hours to keep an eye on him.

Just to let you know, he pooped most of it out and has seemed to be okay. Needless to say after reading here and elsewhere, there is no more rawhide in our home, just nylabones and kongs. Thanks everyone!

make sure he drinks lots of water and cont to stool. Dogs can get bowel obstructions from swollowing rawhides like that. If you notice he is having trouble stooling, or is having abd swelling or distention get him to the vet immediatly. Be careful w/ those rawhides, they can choke on them as well

Scary isn't it? I am sorry I know how you are feeling. I had a puppy who about choked to death on a piece of rawhide. Since then, I have never bought it again, and do not recommend it for puppies or dogs.

It sounds like he will be fine, just keep an eye on him, hopefully he will pass it. Good Luck!!

Maybe...For now just watch him. If he starts acting painful, stops eating, vomits and the rawhide doesn't come up then you must take him to the vet asap. When that happens they almost always have to surgically remove it. Good luck

yes it may cause a blockage. I posted on another question saying that these things were bad for dogs. I had to have a dog operated on many years ago because she swallowed a bit of this vile stuff.
Take the pup to the vet ASAP and in future give nothing but large beef bones or 'postmans legs' from the pet shop.

I never give my dogs rawhide. It is very upsetting to their stomachs. Watch the dog for signs like diarrhea and vomiting. It may just pass?

you need to be careful with rawhides. My vet told me that he has to do a couple of surgeries a year b/c of rawhides. They will not chew them properly and gather in their stomach or intestines and he will have to do surgery to remove them.

He will either puke it up or digest it. At 15 weeks, he's really too young for rawhide, though.

Just make sure it passes through. If he seems to not be eating well or throwing up what he just ate then there may be a blockage. Then you need to take him to a vet.
