Vegetarians in the UK (I don't know about the labelling requirements elsewhere) shouldn't eat meat 'flavoured' crisps. That's because they contain meat. Confusingly, meat 'flavour' is OK!
Legally to use the term 'Flavoured' the manufacturer must include the specified flavouring in the product; ie beef 'flavoured' crisps must have some beef (or beef extract) in them.
The term 'Flavour' on the other hand means just that. Meat Flavour crisps therefore should taste of meat but may (or may not) contain it!! Hence a few years ago someone was able to launch some 'Hedgehog Flavour' crisps which did not, of course, contain any hedgehog.
Bottom line is that because of odd additives etc I only consider them ok if the packet says they are suitable for vegetarians.

It really depends on the crisps you are purchasing. Some crisps merely have meat flavouring, it is always best to check the label really, because there are some crisps that I though had pork in them but it turned out to be pork flavoured and had no pork in them at all. But some crisps are more obvious than others, I think you can get crisps that are meat flavoured and definately suitable for vegetarians to eat.

It's fine. If you like it and it is a vegetarian product then why not. I personally no longer care for even the smell of meat anymore, so I'm sure I would not like the taste, but that is not why I am a vegan. Shortly before I switched over to a vegan diet I was eating a lot of steak and absolutely loving it. People that stop eating meat for ethical reasons to do with the exploitation and inhumane treatment of animals are still perfectly normal if they still like the taste of meat. Yes, meat tastes freaking good. Just because it tastes good doesn't mean that we should just say screw it and let animals be treated that way just so we can taste them three times a day. I do think though that the longer you go without it and the more you find out about what those animals have to go through, the less great it tastes.

As long as they don't use meat stock etc to flavour them! If they are marked suitable for vegetarians on the bag then Veggies can eat them if they want. Plus do you think crisps REALLY taste like what they are meant to taste like anyway? I don't. They are a fat - loaded treat so if I fancy a packet of crisps and they are veggie friendly , I'll eat them !!!

Funnily enough, most meat-flavoured crisps contain no animal products, whereas some Cheese/ Cheese and Onion crisps are non-vegetarian due to the fact that they contain rennet. I think Walkers have recently changed their Cheese and Onion crisps to make them veggie friendly, though. Just keep your eye out for the little green leaf logo!

It is wierd as some flavours of some crisps like beef are fine and yet I believe Walkers Cheese and Onion isn't veggie/vegan. You have to read every pack, I'm afraid as some use real meat powder eg Nobbys Crisps.

If the label says vegetarian and/or vegan or a reliable source says that they are safe.
Most meat flavours are synthetic but many brands like Walkers may use a powder made from meat to enhance the flavours.
'Meat' flavours hardly ever taste like the real thing. I can remember what chicken, cow and pig taste like and what non-veggie crisps taste like. I'm sorry, but no matter how much chicken or lamb powder these companies dump into the products, they usually smell like a fart- and taste like one, I imagine.
Most crisps taste exactly the same anyway due to the e-number 621 (MSG), which isn't very good for you (and isn't recommended for children's consumption)
There is a UK company called Organix who make baby crisps from sweetcorn and tomato (safe for veggies) that have no MSG or other garbage in. One flavour tastes like cheesy wotsits!

If they are veggie, sure.
I don't understand why people find it "perplexing". Its just a flavouring, its not like saying I'm craving meat or anything. I can't remember what meat tastes like, so i have no interest in trying to replicate the flavour. I can eat veggie beef flavour crisps if i want, because they are spicy ( or whatever ) not because i think they taste like dead cow.
Is it also true that a veggie cannot eat vegetarian bread thats in a wrapper with a picture of a prawn sandwich on it ? No , thought not.
Veggies don't eat animals or by-products, its nothing to do with flavour.
Personally, i don't eat them, but that wasn't the question I suppose.

Walkers crisps used to have dead cows in them, you are right. But now ( as of summer 05 I think ) they are veggie...the cheese rennet flavouring they use, that used to be the offending article, in now veggie....but best to check regularly in case they revert to meat.

Most meat flavour crisps seem to be veggie. It's the cheese ones you've got to check double-carefully.

Hey who says you cant... of-course you can... now if you are a real strict kind of a person who just hates eating t non-veg(Meat) then the answer is NO. Coz if you have ever checked out the ingredients of any meat flavor crisps then you will see an ingredient called as pork powder. I am addressing the MCCOYS Oriental Ribs Crisp. So basically you are eating 0.0001% of nonveg... but trust me buddy.... these are one of the best crisp i have ever eaten
