if you die at the age of 40 and under is the medical examiner required to do an autospy if the cause of death is unknown or does the medical examiner suppose to just guess

Most of my knowledge on Autopsy's are those required as a result of an criminal Investigation (Forensic autopsy). For other, such as those done in hospitals, they have to be requested - family members can decline to have one, anyway.

Personally, an Autopsy should always be done and there are circumstances the law requires an Autopsy be performed. This goes especially in cases where there may be civil litigation or insurance purposes, i.e. as a result of experimental treatment(Clinical autopsy).

I don't believe the examiner can guess even if the cause of death is apparent e.g. gun shot wound to the head. If autopsy is not required by law because of the circumstances of death, it will not be performed unless the family gives specific permission.

Hope this answers your question!

if the cause of death seems suspect, then the coroner may order an autopsy. The family can also request one. There are times when an autopsy may not be required, but coroners, just as other people, have "quotas" they have to meet. You can tell your family if you do/don't want one, but if it is crime-related, you may not have a choice in the matter. Most of the time, if the deceased is young, an autopsy will be performed.

It is only required when cause of death is undetermined or suspecious, or criminal activities are suspected/involved. Medical examiner does not guess. He/she determines the cause of death by history, characteristics, medical reports, toxicology report (when warranted), etc. and determines the cause of death scientifically.

autopsy requires only if death is suspicious in order to acknowledge the real cause of death for some legal purposes.

I don't think autopsies are REQUIRED at all. Lots of people can order one, but there's no law that mandates them or anything.

I would think that they normally would do one unless the family decides against it.
