I make my own- there's a very good recipe in the latest edition of the Joy of Cooking that I especially like, or, here's a good basic recipe with all the essential ingredients. You can find everything you need at an Asian market.

HOT AND SOUR SOUP

INGREDIENTS

* 5 dried wood ear mushrooms
* 4 dried shiitake mushrooms
* 8 dried tiger lily buds
* 4 cups chicken stock
* 1/3 cup diced bamboo shoots
* 1/3 cup lean ground pork
* 1 teaspoon soy sauce
* 1/2 teaspoon white sugar
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
* 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
* 2 tablespoons cornstarch
* 3 tablespoons water
* 1/2 (16 ounce) package firm tofu, cubed
* 1 egg, lightly beaten
* 1 teaspoon sesame oil
* 2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion

DIRECTIONS

1. Soak the dried mushrooms and tiger lily buds in warm water for 20 minutes. After trimming off any tough stems, slice the mushrooms. With the fingers, shred the tiger lily stems.
2. Place the mushrooms, tiger lily buds, stock, bamboo shoots, and shredded pork into a saucepan. Bring to a boil, and simmer for 10 minutes.
3. Stir in soy sauce, sugar, salt, white pepper, and vinegar. Combine cornstarch with 3 tablespoons water. Add a little of the hot soup to the cornstarch, and then return all to the pan. Heat to boiling, stirring. Add the bean curd, and cook 1 to 2 minutes.
4. Just before serving, turn off the heat. Stir the egg in gradually. Mix in sesame oil. Sprinkle each serving with scallions.

This is a pretty good recipe that's not too difficult and without hard-to-find exotic ingredients:

Hot and Sour Chicken Soup

Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Cook Time: 20 Minutes Ready In: 30 Minutes
Yields: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:
3 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup water
2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
1/2 cup sliced bamboo shoots,
drained
3 slices fresh ginger root
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into thin strips
1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 green onions, chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 egg, beaten

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a saucepan, combine the chicken broth, water, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and hot pepper flakes. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer while you assemble the rest of the ingredients.
2. Place the chicken slices into a bowl and toss with the sesame oil to coat. In a separate bowl, stir together the cornstarch and vinegar, and set aside.
3. Increase the heat under the broth to medium-high, and return to a rolling boil. Add the chicken slices. Return to a boil, and then drizzle in the egg while stirring slowly to create long strands of egg. Stir in the vinegar and cornstarch. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until chicken is cooked through and the broth has thickened slightly, about 3 minutes. Serve garnished with green onions and cilantro.

Okay, this might not help you if you aren't in the US, but in many US grocery stores you can find it, but NOT in the soup aisle. Try the 'ethnic' aisles, near the Chinese or Thai food. It'll be either in a packet (more likely) or in a plastic bowl (not a can!) and you'll reconstitute it.

if u live by a safeway or albertsons, stop by the asian aisle and then check out the powder soups. or if you live near a chinese grocery place, go to the aisle that specializes in dried items, such as seaweed and u can find it there

u usually have to add tofu.. or meat
