Hi, I am too embarassed to take a glucose pill in public (on the job, for example) but I have problems where my blood sugar drops low (not diabetes, just hypoglycemia). I am afraid someone will think I am "popping pills" or just plain crazy or sickly or something if they see me do this. I am afraid in the grocery store also that I should look ok all the time even if I feel icky. I am afraid they will throw me out of there if I look "sick."

But I know when I am getting woozy and I don't want it to get worse. Am I too paranoid about this or is it really better to avoid taking the sugar pill in public? Maybe they will think its candy if I put it in a non-medicine container? I don't want people to think badly of me.

You shouldn't worry what people might think, you have NO control over this...Do whats best for you... If you think about it people are going to think what that want anyway...If you fall out on a pavement because you got too woozy, People would probably think..call 911..Its a lot of people out there that would help you, but you don't want it to go that far. .You don't want your condition getting worse, because you are paranoid about taking a pill in public. I like the idea of putting your pills in a different container, something like a tic-tac container, (candy) ...who would ever know, unless you tell somebody. Stop worrying about folks.....If people would mind their own business you probably wouldn't be paranoid in the first place. Please stop worrying and take good care of yourself. If anyone ever questions you about what you are taking, just tell them the truth, show them the pill and tell them what would happen if you don't take it, more than likely they will understand.

First and foremost you have got to be worried about yourself and not what other people are thinking. Although sometimes hard, you are the most important and if you don't want to go low - take the pills!

I have been a diabetic for 11 years and too had issues with public things. Now, I take my insulin in public (and that is with a needle) and it does not phase anyone - and if it does really I do not care because it is something that I have to do.

Don't worry about the public, worry about taking care of yourself - the rest will be fine!

Good luck.

Why don't you take a juice box with you? or packets of sugar. Your health is a lot more important than what people think of you. Imagine you don't take the tablet and you start having a seizure because you let it get too low. People may start having some thoughts then. I have had to pop some glucose tablets in public before, and I think people believe they are giant sweetarts (sp) So just pop em' in whenever you need to

Ya know what? Most people just don't pay much attention to us, and probably wouldn't even notice. So what if they do? Your health is what is important here. It someone should approach you at work, then explain what you just said here. If you're at the grocery, who cares? Is it better to collapse in the store, or take your meds and carry on? Take care of yourself. That's what I want you to do.

When it comes to your health you really shouldn't be concerned with what others think. If you don't take the medication when you need it you may have a reaction.... for example fainting. That could serious other injuries. I would forgo any hesitation and take the medication as prescribed. It's just as easy to excuse yourself and take it in private.

People take medication for all kinds of things. Like my dad has high blood pressure and takes meds for that. Sometimes I take a tylenol for a headache. No one is going to think it is weird for you to take a prescribed medication. People will actually probably be shocked if they find out you aren't taking care of yourself.
