The party is next weekend, dec 9th, and I need ideas on what to make for it and what to ask my guests to bring. There is an estimated 4 to 8 people coming. I have a big dining table from IKEA to serve food on. What should I do?

You do not say if this is a dinner potluck or just a cocktail party potluck. For a dinner potluck, if I were you, I would make the main course myself and have everyone else bring side dishes. For your main course, you could serve Lasagna, which is very easy to throw together before hand and very easy to serve. You could have everyone bring something to accompany, such as a green salad, garlic bread, jello mold, veggie tray, chips and dip, cookies/bars. For a cocktail type party, I would just have everyone bring hors'deourves, with you taking the lead with a crock pot of sweet and sour meatballs, or something to be eaten hot. Have others bring chips and salsa, spinich dip, veggie tray, etc. Either way, MAKE SURE YOU DESIGNATE WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD BRING - or you are going to end up with too much of one thing and not enough of everything else!! HAVE FUN!! Happy Holidays!!

What I usually do is provide the main course (a turkey or a roast - or, if you are vegetarian, something appropriate) and ask the other people to bring side dishes and desserts. Since it is your party, you are providing the big ticket item and drinks - and the rest will be provided potluck style by the guests.

Since it is a small party, you may want to provide dessert as well, and just ask the others to bring side dishes.

I hope you have an excellent time!

Have you delegated dishes to anyone else yet? Or just guessing who's going to bring what? If I were you I'd make the main dish like a turkey or ham, and maybe a different side dish than usual, like pasta or something. Everyone will probably bring something traditional so there should be a variety.

Good luck!

Make sure you delagate people to bring different foods, so you have a variety. Try a pasta dish for a main meal, like a store bought lasange would be delicious. Try Sams Club or Wal-mart for a big pack of appetizers and sncks: chips, mini quiched, ect.

have a nacho bar...keep cheese warm in a crock pot and have different toppings set up. Meatballs are always a good idea, a spinach dip filled sourdough bread bowl, veggie tray, chocolate covered strawberries

I like to serve chilli. if you wanna cheat you can pick some up from wendys and add your own extras to make it special. make sure to let it simmer long enough to cook extras (how about adding cheese).
i like to also mix up tuna with light mayo pepper, and green onions sliced. makes a good dip on crackers.
a fruit platter is always a must with homemade dip (strawberry yogurt mixed with cool whip and let set) amazing!
