According to the CDC, there are over 100 strains of HPV. 30 of those strains are sexually transmitted. 4 of those are the most deadly and destructive. 2 cause cervical cancer and 2 cause genital warts. Since HPV is a virus it is incurable. Women can be tested thru a pap smear. Men can not be tested. Usually men are questioned about the sexual health of their partners to see if there is a link to the spread of HPV.
As for spreading the virus, it is skin to skin. A condom will not protect you since that does not completely cover the genital area. You can even get genital warts (HPV) in the anus!
The only sure way to avoid contraction is abstinence. Not an easy choice today, but definitely the safest.

HPV is human papilloma virus. It's not only a sexually transmitted disease. It's also found in warts on your hands and plantar warts on your feet. They are transmitted the same way, though, and that's from skin to skin contact with someone who has HPV. It's a virus, and it can live on objects for a small amount of time, so if I had some warts on my hands, and I shook hands with you or gave you a dollar that had been in my hand, then I could transmit that virus to you and possibly cause you to get warts on your hands as well.
The HPV's that affects your genital area are different strains from the HPV's that affect your hands or feet though.
