Perhaps salads and cold meat with hors d'oeuvres... olives, pickles, small pieces of cheese, pieces of celery, etc... No turkey since all will have so much of it from now until Christmas. Your cake and sweetBread sounds delicious, so try to avoid heavy food so the guests can enjoy your baking talents.
Happy birthday to your husband and great success with your planning

You could serve a veggie and fruit platters, I know Publix has these platters avaviable if you can afford it or you can create your own platters. Good finger foods are: barbeque chicken wings, potato chips, and small sandwhiches. You could also have a pot luck party, this is where everyone brings something to eat and something to drink, you just have to make sure everyone brings something different. My family does this so the person hosting the party is not stuck doing all the cooking and cleaning up for the party. I would do what is easest for you, you will want to enjoy the party and not spend the whole time preparing the food and/ or cleaning up. You could buy plastic dissposeable cups, plates, bowls and silverware to cut down on the time it will take you to clean up. You could also buy canned juices, and/ or canned soda for everyone to drink..

Then do a sandwich bar.Get a basket and put your breads in it, then have your condiments, take the meats & cheeses and put them on the tray. They can go down a row and make themselves a sandwich. If that doesn't seem like enough, you could also have some potato&pasta salads to go with that. That will get them thru a Church Service. You can have the decorations all thru the buffet.

Perhaps some shrimp creole, it's good for cold weather, and easy. Buy some shrimp, saute with garlic, diced onions, diced celery, a little cayenne pepper and salt, then add tomato juice and simmer. Make some white rice and serve the creole over the rice.

Ummm...Like chicken always work, a Rotisserie Chicken or baked chicken, with a salad, rolls, and a veggie like corn or green beans. That way no one leaves hungry. And you really cant go wrong with chicken, and now that grocery stores sell all hot and ready rotisserie chicken you can save some time.....

A hearty chicken/sausage gumbo with the best baguette you can find. Do all the work the day before and remember to provide hot sauces for those who like it spicy. Enjoy.
