Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol and it is the only active ingredient in nearly all products that sterilize various surfaces or skin (such as the hands) so YES it will destroy 99% (which may be where your 99% solution comes from as there are no solutions to my knowledge which are that potent) of the bacteria, mold, fungus, spirochetes, spores, and so on. They make such disinfectants in pads, sprays, liquids, and foam preparations and many are designed to fit into the pocket or purse. I very highly recommend such products and I do not leave home without them.

Applied externally as a cooling, soothing application for bedridden patients and athletes. It is also widely used for cleansing the surgeon's hands and instruments and for disinfection of the skin prior to penetration of the skin by a hypodermic needle. As an antiseptic it is good against vegetative bacteria and fair against fungi and viruses. It is ineffective against spores. It is widely believed that 70% ethanol provides the greatest reduction in bacterial count; however, this is in error. Other concentrations may be more effective, but their rate of kill is slower. In order to reduce the skin bacterial count to 5% of normal, 70% ethanol must be left on the skin for at least 2 min. Rubbing alcohol is also a feeble anesthetic and a mild counterirritant. It is not potable (drinkable).

It will kill over 99% of the most worrisome bateria and viruses, like HIV, herpes, staph, etc. It is not effective against bacteria on the clostridium family, which can cause diarrhea and tetanus. Please do your own research too, as you are not getting correct info in some of the answers here. For example, 70% alcohol used the way you describe (leaving surface wet) WILL absolutely kill viruses. Viruses are some of the least hardy organisms out there. Best wishes.

I never knew rubbing alcohol would kill those things. I always heard that a bleach and water solution would do the trick.
