Hang a LOT of mistletoe!
Sometimes just having a camera around creates conversation. Buy a handful of disposables and tell everyone to get creative.

Hi, I think games like Charades, Karaoke, and Pictionary are always fun. And if you have photo albums with pictures of some of your guests, you should leave them around the tables too for them to look through and reminisce. Two years ago when we had our christmas party, I had the movie Christmas Vacation playing low on the tv in the background ~ which help break up any lulls. And good x-mas music always puts people in a festive mood. Have fun!!

Serve a meal instead. That way there is an order to things, and folks know what is coming next. You can either do it sit-down, if you have room, or stand-up buffet style. "Soup is served." now "Salad is served" then "The Entree is served" and finally "Dessert is served." Select things that can be eaten standing up or on a lap easily, adn that don't require pulling apart (chicken wings, for example).
If you have a piano, hire a piano player. Or hire one that will bring a clavinova. Folks will have a blast singing Cmas carols and making special requests of the musician.

Buy a whole bunch of small bells that can be hung around your guests neck. Each person that comes in the house gets one bell but you need to have a secret word.
You start by having a bell around your own neck and as soon as someone says the secret word, you give him your bell.
Soon, people will catch on and the winner is the one with the most bells.
Sounds stupid, but it is a lot of fun!

Have everyone bring a gift, $10.00 limit, wrapped. Mark each gift with a number. Let your guests draw a number (1 to match number of gifts). First person selects any gift, opens it. 2nd person can then take an unwrapped gift & open OR take the gift from the first person. If the gift is taken from the first person, they go pick an unwrapped gift and open it. 3rd person can then choose unwrapped or either of the already opened gifts. Keep doing this til all gifts have been opened & swapped.

I have several small gatherings a year and people just sitting around never happened. Unless you are inviting introverts, I can't see that being an issue. Make sure you have music and fun people..thats what makes a party.

"White Elephant" gift exchanges can be a lot of fun, especially if you to the kind where everyone draws a number. Person #1 selects a wrapped gift from the pile and opens it. Person #2 can choose to either steal Person #1's gift (in which case, #1 selects a new gift), or to pick and open a gift of their own. Person #3 can either steal gift #1 or #2, or pick and open a new one . . . and so forth.

Request they come in red pajamas and serve Red Roosters (see Emeril's website) with lots of finger type food and jazz Christmas music. Go get CLR dice and three rolls of quarters. Of course throwing in a Liberal for insults always livens things up.
