In fact it is the other way round. Common cold is a virus infection. The patient develops immunity against that virus if attacked once. This way he goes on getting immunity against as many viruses as have attacked him and hence frequency of common cold attacks get reduced.

We do stay indoors more when it is cold and this increases the chances of you touching a surface that has been infected with a virus. The cold has nothing to do with catching more colds except in the sense that some people may have an already compromised immune system and if they catch a chill their body cannot fight off the virus as easily. As far as building up immunity to the cold virus so catching less??? There are well over 200 different cold viruses known of- this is why you hear people say "I just got over a cold and now have another one." Different virus... Lots of habd washing helps avoid catching the viruses. If you touch a surface that has the virus ,then touch your eyes ,nose or mouth-badabing-you have just infected yourself. The alcohol hand washes are great to carry with you.

The cold air needs to be warmed by mucus before it hits the lungs. Mucus warms and moistens the air (and filters). When it gets colder outside, the mucus membranes produce more mucus. Rhinorhea, excess drainage from the nose, is a sign of a cold, but in this case, it is from cold air. People are not more prone to a cold in cold weather than in warm weather.

Because they tend to stay indoors more when it's cold outside. This has them cooped up with others who may have a cold or the flu.

I like Brewjar"s answer, but not the others, I think it has to do with your body temperature, when it is lower it effects your immune system, I've noticed that with babies if you don't keep them bundled up, they get sick because they have a hard time maintaining there own body temperatures.
