I just found out I have chlamydia. I've got a girlfriend, and I'm wondering whether one can get chlamydia in any other way than through sexual intercourse as I haven't cheated on her.

Chlamydia can stay hidden in women's system for a long time so there is a chance she could have had it without knowing and passed it on that way. The infection can only be passed through sexual intercourse or sexual activity.

Chlamydia doesn't show symptoms in a lot of cases so you may have had it for a long time and just not been aware of it. You can get Chlamydia from unprotected sex with an infected person - that includes oral sex. You can pass it to your eyes and the bacteria could cause blindness. It is very unlikely that you caught it by non sexual means. It has probably been in your system for a while.
Remember to take the full course of antibiotics and abstain from sex until you have gone the full 14 days or you could pass it back to your partner.

Chlamydia belong to a group of microbes halfway between bacteria and viruses. They can be killed by a proper course of the right antibiotics.
Because you say you have chlamydia, everyone has assumed it was sexual. There are other ways it can be contracted.
One answer mentions cats. It can cause 'sticky eye' in kittens. This is NOT the same as sticky eye in human babies.
Another form comes from feathered birds, e.g. budgies and parrots generally the type called psittacosis.
It also causes spontaneous abortion in sheep and goats. A good reason why pregnant women should avoid working with these animals while pregnant.

Don't jump to conclusions, it may be o ne of these other sources.

The important thing is to get the correct treatment for both of you!
Good luck.

Chlamydia is an STD, that means it is contracted through intercourse. It has easily unnoticed symptoms, however. This can mean you can have it a long time or through multiple relationships without anyone knowing. If either one of you had any previous exposure, like BEFORE the current relationship, it could have been passed on in this way.

Sexually transmitted urethritis, cervicitis, proctitis, and pharyngitis not due to gonorrhea are caused predominantly by chlamydia and infrequently by mycoplasma or ureaplasma. Chlamydia may also cause salpingitis, epididymitis, perihepatitis, neonatal conjunctivitis, and infant pneumonia. Untreated chlamydial salpingitis can become chronic, causing minimal symptoms but leading to serious consequences. Diagnosis is by culture, immunoassay for antigens, or genetic methods. Treatment is with single-dose azithromycin or a week of ofloxacin, levofloxacin, erythromycin, or a tetracycline.
Please see the web pages for more details on Chlamydia.

I had a similar experience - I got chlamydia even though I'd never cheated on my husband, he'd never cheated on me (I do believe that, I don't think I'm being naive!) and the two of us were virgins when we met. The GP said that it can happen sometimes that the bacterium can be contracted in other ways, although I never could figure out how.

Anyway, it's good that you found out - now you and your g/f can both get treated and neither of you will be storing up long-term problems from an untreated infection.

You can get it on e.bay. Sorry I couldn't resist. It's not funny, I think sexual intercourse is the only way to get it but if you have been totally faithful then the evidence either points to her playing around or to the fact that the infection can stay hidden for a long time. I would go to the Doctor to find out and get yourself better.

All the best.

chlamydia is often symptom free in men so not detected. either of you could have brought this from a previous relationship and be unaware. i wouldn't be too hasty to blame. you can also get chlamydia through birth from mother to baby, which effects the bavies eyes, but obviously thats not relevant in your case. go to local genito urinary clinic and give a urine sample. treatment is easy.

The literature states that chlamydia is acquired via sexual contact of any variety.

Given this fact you acquired it from somebody with whom you have had sex -- of any variety.

Yes its kind of the same as a virus, meaning if you have contact on your hand and touch else where it could become infected! Also through oral sex!!
