Asthma is not contageous, it is inherited through your parents or grandparents. Your stepbrother was throwing up probably from the coughing. Asthma reduces the amount of air, and as a reflex, sometimes you start coughing to clear the airway. Coughing can be violent enough to cause you to throw up. My daughter did it all the time when her asthma was particularly bad. Coughing at night, is a good symptom to know that the asthma is worsening and your brother needs to see his doctor again to have his medications checked up on to see if they are the best ones for him.

1. Asthma is not contagious. It is hereditary or caused by allergies.
2. Your stepbrother is throwing up because he coughs so hard he gags himself, or it's because he is just plain sick.

1. No. It is not contagious.
2. The throwing up could either be due to excessive coughing or a sympathetic release of epinephrine (adrenaline) or due to medications (SQ epinephrine or albuterol) but this is not usual.
There is not enough info to guess why he was throwing up.
